Finding the best free VPN Reddit users recommend can be difficult because different people have different priorities. Some users want unlimited data, while others care more about speed, privacy, server locations, or ease of use.
Recent Reddit discussions frequently mention Proton VPN and Windscribe when people ask about free VPN services. At the same time, independent testing shows that free VPNs can have important limitations, including restricted server choices, slower speeds, or limited features.
This guide explains what Reddit users are saying and what you should know before choosing a free VPN.
What Is the Best Free VPN Reddit Users Talk About?
Proton VPN is one of the most frequently mentioned names in recent Reddit discussions about free VPNs. Users often mention its unlimited data allowance and privacy-focused features. Windscribe is another service that appears in discussions, particularly among users who want more control over available locations.
However, Reddit comments are personal experiences rather than controlled tests. A VPN that works well for one person may perform differently for someone in another country or on a different internet connection.
Proton VPN Free
Proton VPN is particularly notable because its free plan has no data limit. Proton says the free service also has no advertisements, a no-logs policy, and support for Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone/iPad, Linux, and other platforms.
Recent Reddit discussions repeatedly mention Proton VPN when users ask for a free VPN. Some Reddit users report that it works well for basic browsing, although speeds can vary depending on the server and time of day.
Proton VPN Free Features
The free plan includes:
- Unlimited data
- No advertisements
- Kill switch
- Encryption
- No-logs policy
- Apps for major operating systems
- Free access without a time limit
Proton’s current documentation says its free plan allows one device at a time and automatically selects from a limited group of free-server locations.
One limitation is that free users cannot simply choose any country they want. Proton says free users are connected to randomly selected free-server locations.
Windscribe Free
Windscribe is another VPN that appears in Reddit discussions about free VPN services.
Users sometimes mention Windscribe because its free plan provides access to multiple locations and is designed for people who do not want to purchase a subscription immediately. Reddit discussions show that some users prefer Windscribe for location flexibility, while others prefer Proton VPN because of its unlimited data.
The exact free-plan allowances and features can change, so users should check Windscribe’s current official documentation before signing up.
Why Do Reddit Users Like Free VPNs?
There are several reasons people search for free VPNs on Reddit.
No Monthly Subscription
The biggest advantage is obvious: there is no regular subscription payment for a free plan.
This can be useful for students or people who only need a VPN occasionally.
Basic Privacy
A VPN can encrypt your internet connection between your device and the VPN server. This can be useful when using networks such as public Wi-Fi.
However, a VPN does not make someone completely anonymous online.
Testing Before Paying
A free plan can also give users an opportunity to learn how a VPN works before deciding whether a paid service is necessary.
Free VPN Limitations
Free VPNs are not necessarily equivalent to paid VPN plans.
One common limitation is the number of available server locations. Proton VPN’s free plan, for example, has a smaller selection than its paid plans.
Speed can also vary. Proton says its free servers can become busy, which may affect connection speed.
Some free VPNs may also restrict features such as streaming support, torrenting, simultaneous connections, or server selection.
Is a Free VPN Safe?
Not every free VPN should automatically be considered safe.
Independent testing recommends looking at factors such as the provider’s privacy policy, encryption, kill switch, data limits, and reputation before installing a free VPN.
This is particularly important because running VPN servers and maintaining applications costs money. Users should understand how a free provider funds its service and what information it collects.
Downloading VPN applications from unofficial websites can also create unnecessary security risks. It is better to use the provider’s official website or the official app store for your device.
Reddit Opinions vs Independent Testing
Reddit is useful for discovering real-world experiences, but it should not be the only source used to evaluate a VPN.
For example, recent Reddit threads contain users recommending both Proton VPN and Windscribe, while some users warn that free VPNs can have speed or privacy limitations.
Independent testing provides another perspective. RTINGS currently lists Proton VPN Free as a free VPN with no data cap, while also pointing out limitations such as restricted server selection and disabled torrenting on the free plan.
Using both types of information gives readers a more balanced picture.
What Should You Check Before Choosing a Free VPN?
Before installing any free VPN, consider these factors.
1. Data Limits
Some free VPNs limit how much data you can use each month. If you regularly browse or watch videos, this can become an important limitation.
2. Server Locations
Check whether the free plan provides servers in locations you actually need.
3. Speed
Free servers can become crowded. A service that looks fast in one location may perform differently in another.
4. Privacy Policy
Read the provider’s privacy policy and check what information it collects.
5. Kill Switch
A kill switch can stop internet traffic if the VPN connection unexpectedly drops.
6. Official Download Source
Always download the VPN application from an official website or an official app store.
Best Free VPN for Basic Browsing
For basic browsing, Proton VPN’s free plan is notable because it provides unlimited data and does not show advertisements. Proton also says its free plan includes a kill switch and the same core encryption approach used across its service.
However, users should remember that free servers can become busy and that the free plan has fewer locations and features than the paid version.
Can You Use a Free VPN on a Phone?
Yes. Major free VPN services can provide applications for smartphones.
Proton VPN currently offers apps for Android and iPhone/iPad, alongside desktop platforms.
Before installing an application, check that the developer name matches the official VPN provider and download it through the official app store.

Final Thoughts
The search for the best free VPN Reddit users recommend often leads to Proton VPN and Windscribe. Recent Reddit discussions show that people have different experiences depending on their location, connection, and intended use.
Proton VPN stands out among free options because its current free plan offers unlimited data, no advertisements, encryption, and a kill switch. It also has limitations, including fewer server choices and one-device-at-a-time access.
Before choosing any free VPN, compare its privacy policy, data limits, server availability, speed, and security features. Reddit can provide useful user experiences, but combining those discussions with independent testing and official provider information gives a clearer picture.
