Searching for the best VPN Reddit users recommend can be confusing. Reddit has thousands of discussions about VPN services, with different users focusing on privacy, speed, streaming, ease of use, price, and security.
In 2026, several VPN names appear repeatedly in Reddit discussions, including Proton VPN, Mullvad, NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN. However, Reddit users do not all agree on one provider. Recent discussions show that people often choose a VPN based on what they actually need rather than looking for one service that works perfectly for everyone.
This guide looks at the VPNs frequently discussed on Reddit and explains the main factors users consider when comparing them.
What Does Reddit Say About the Best VPN?
Recent Reddit discussions frequently mention Proton VPN, Mullvad, and NordVPN. Some users focus heavily on privacy and prefer services such as Mullvad and Proton VPN, while others mention NordVPN when speed and streaming are important.
This difference is important because the phrase “best VPN” does not have one universal meaning.
For example, someone interested mainly in privacy may look for strong privacy policies and minimal account information. Another person may care more about connection speed, server locations, or ease of use.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN is one of the VPN services that appears frequently in Reddit discussions.
Reddit users often mention Proton VPN when discussing privacy, open-source applications, and its free plan. Some recent Reddit discussions describe Proton as a popular option for people who want a combination of privacy and everyday usability.
Independent testing also recognizes Proton VPN’s privacy and security features. RTINGS notes that Proton VPN Free provides unlimited data, although the free version has limitations compared with paid VPN services.
Proton VPN Features
Some commonly discussed features include:
- Free VPN option
- Encrypted VPN connections
- Open-source apps
- Privacy-focused features
- Paid plans with additional features
- Support for multiple platforms
The free version can be useful for people who want to try a VPN without paying, although free plans generally have fewer features than premium subscriptions.
Mullvad VPN
Mullvad is another name that appears regularly in Reddit privacy discussions.
The service has a different account system from many mainstream VPN providers. Instead of requiring a traditional email-based account, Mullvad provides users with a randomly generated account number.
Independent testing by RTINGS highlights Mullvad’s privacy approach, including minimal account information, anonymous payment options, and independent audits.
Mullvad also uses a flat monthly pricing structure rather than relying on long-term subscription discounts.
Why Reddit Users Discuss Mullvad
Privacy-focused Reddit communities frequently discuss Mullvad because of its approach to account information and privacy.
Recent Reddit conversations also show that some users prefer Mullvad for privacy while others choose different providers for streaming or broader features.
NordVPN
NordVPN is another major name in Reddit VPN discussions.
Users frequently mention NordVPN when discussing speed, streaming, and general everyday VPN use. Recent Reddit discussions show users comparing NordVPN with Proton VPN and Mullvad depending on their needs.
Independent technology reviews also continue to evaluate NordVPN highly for performance and features. TechRadar’s 2026 VPN guide highlights NordVPN’s speed, security features, and ease of use.
NordVPN Features
Depending on the current plan, features can include:
- NordLynx protocol
- Large server network
- Kill switch
- Threat protection features
- Apps for major platforms
- Streaming support
Users interested in NordVPN should check its current plans and features because VPN services frequently change pricing and subscription features.
Surfshark
Surfshark is another VPN regularly mentioned in Reddit discussions.
Some users discuss Surfshark because of its pricing and support for multiple devices. Recent Reddit conversations include people comparing Surfshark with Proton VPN, Mullvad, and NordVPN.
TechRadar’s 2026 testing also highlights Surfshark’s support for unlimited device connections as one of its notable features.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN is also frequently included in Reddit discussions about VPN services.
It is generally discussed as a mainstream option with a focus on simple applications and broad platform support.
However, Reddit experiences vary. Some users prefer ExpressVPN’s simplicity, while others choose different services because of pricing, privacy preferences, or specific features.
This is one reason it is useful to read several recent discussions instead of relying on a single Reddit comment.
Best Free VPN According to Reddit Discussions
Free VPNs are a common topic on Reddit.
Proton VPN is frequently mentioned in discussions about free VPN options, particularly because it offers a free plan without a traditional monthly data cap.
Independent testing also lists Proton VPN Free as an unlimited-data option, although it has restrictions compared with paid VPN services.
Users should be careful with unknown free VPN applications. A free VPN still needs to operate a business, so it is important to understand its privacy policy, data practices, advertising model, and limitations before using it.
Best VPN for Privacy
Privacy is one of the biggest reasons people search for VPNs.
Recent independent testing by RTINGS highlights Mullvad for its privacy practices, while Proton VPN also receives attention for its security and privacy features.
Reddit discussions show a similar pattern, with Mullvad and Proton VPN appearing repeatedly in privacy-focused conversations.
However, a VPN should not be considered a complete privacy solution. It mainly changes how your internet traffic is routed and shifts some trust from your internet service provider to the VPN company.
What Should You Look for in a VPN?
Instead of choosing a VPN simply because it appears in a Reddit post, consider several factors.
Privacy Policy
Read what information the provider collects and how long it keeps that information.
Security
Look for strong encryption, secure protocols, DNS leak protection, and a reliable kill switch.
Speed
VPN connections can reduce internet speeds because your traffic travels through an additional server. Testing results can vary depending on your location and the server you choose.
Server Locations
If you need connections in particular countries, check the provider’s current server coverage.
Device Support
Check whether the VPN works on the devices you actually use, such as Windows, Android, iPhone, macOS, or Linux.
Price
Compare the total subscription cost rather than focusing only on promotional introductory prices.
Reddit vs Professional VPN Reviews
Reddit can be useful because it contains personal experiences from real users.
However, Reddit comments are not controlled laboratory tests. One person may have excellent speeds while another person in a different country experiences slower connections.
Professional testing sites use their own testing methods, while Reddit provides community experiences. Looking at both can provide more context.
For example, RTINGS tested numerous VPN products and evaluates factors including privacy, security, speed, and reliability.
Reddit’s official VPN recommendation megathread also encourages users to explain what they use a VPN for and share actual experiences rather than simply naming a provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
What VPNs are commonly mentioned on Reddit?
Recent Reddit discussions frequently mention Proton VPN, Mullvad, NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN.
Is Reddit a good place to research VPNs?
Reddit can be useful for finding user experiences and discussions, but individual comments should not be treated as definitive product testing.
Is Proton VPN free?
Yes. Proton VPN offers a free plan, although the free version has limitations compared with its paid service.
Does a VPN make you completely anonymous?
No. A VPN can improve privacy by encrypting your connection and hiding your IP address from websites you visit, but it does not make you completely anonymous online.
Is a VPN necessary for everyone?
Not necessarily. Whether you need one depends on your privacy preferences, network environment, travel needs, and how you use the internet.
Final Thoughts
The search for the best VPN Reddit users recommend does not produce one universal answer. Recent discussions mention several major providers, especially Proton VPN, Mullvad, NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN.
The most useful approach is to compare VPNs based on your own requirements. Privacy, speed, device support, server locations, pricing, and available features can all make a difference.
Reddit can provide valuable first-hand experiences, but it is best used alongside independent testing and the provider’s own documentation. That gives you a more complete picture before choosing a VPN.
